as you know, i'm a running junkie. i like the endorphins, plain and simple. i love the freedom of running too. you can just go. it's such a blessing to have legs that work, a body that allows for movement. for me running is my escape, an extension of my time with the lord. my hobby.
that being said, i cannot live in africa for 3 months and not spend a little time pounding pavement..... or red dirt!! while in suubi village, i was able to get a little running in but the terrain is rough and sooooo hilly. the altitude is super high and many of the roads are pretty much vertical!! needless to say, my efforts were not always the greatest. haha. I was known by the kids as the muzungu (white person) who runs though. they would recognize me in the village and often tell me of the times they sat to watch me.... yay for muzungu parade!!!! haha. once there was a kid on a bike who met me at the bottom of a hill and tried to race me to the top (with the children cheering muzungu and laughing at him)..... and.... just in case you were wondering.... i won!!!! haha
a few weeks ago it was brought to my attention that there was a road race in the capital city, kampala. naturally, i could not turn it down. how sweet to run a road race in africa!!! due to my lack of training, i signed up for the 10k and not the 1/2 or full marathon. (future perhaps??). it was an amazing morning!!!!!!!!!! 20,000 ugandans (with an occasional blonde head) showed up for the event. it was a human traffic jam!!! there were so many people I never started 'running' until probably mile 2 or 3... it was a maze of bodies pushing, shoving, chanting, cheering, sweating, running --- quite the adventure!!! I am still alive though and only had a few shoe prints on my legs :) haha So fun!!!!! all of the money raised from the race when to getting clean water to a local village which is super duper too!!!
Next time, I will have to look into these things before I come and train for real ;)
