fooooooooood

so i'm sure you all want to know..... what on earth does one eat in africa? haha. good question! it depends. if you are a local you eat one big meal a day-- often pretty much all carbs (who cares about obesity here!). Often it consists of rice, potatoes, and 'stew'- which is essentially beans, carrots and whatever other random veggies they decide to throw in there! occasionally you get other meat such as chicken, but they don't seem to pay much attention to edible vs unedible parts of the bird so as a visitor i wouldn't recommend eating it :) they also have this bread thing (called chipate) occasionally which is uber greasy but pretty good.

as volunteers, we are responsible for breakfast and dinner. it's a challenge at times since we are out in the middle of nowhere, without reliable electricity, and as noted in a previous post, we don't always have reliable gas either! occasionally we cook 'real food' but it's just not the same. thus, many of us have resorted to the great delicacies of mr. noodles, rice, pb&j and oatmeal. how i long for real food back in the states!!! haha

the past few days i visited gulu (the location of the invisible children documentary). there we were able to get more food from the street vendors. i tried rolex for the first time (chipate bread with fried egg rolled up inside) and had a nice chat with the vendor man. i did avoid the fried grasshoppers... i was told they are 'in season' though!! haha. perhaps some other day when i work up more nerve!
